Travel to Copenhagen

Today was the day that the larger group dispersed. Elizabeth, Allan, Ryan, Shashank, Joe, and Benton had flights to Copenhagen, so we all (with the exception of Joe, who had a 6am flight) got up around 7:45am to take transit to the Berlin airport. The flight to Copenhagen was only about an hour, and by the time we landed and made our way to our hostel (Steel House Copenhagen), it was time to check into the room.

The hostel was pretty entertaining; we had a private room with 6 bunk beds and a private bathroom, but 6 people in one room was quite crowded. This was by far the cheapest and most practical option for our stay, but we definitely agreed that we would not have wanted this to be the living situation for the entire trip.

After checking into the hostel, we went to get lunch at Det Lille Apotek, where most of us ordered smørrebrød. Elizabeth was not a fan (doesn’t like fish), and when our food first came out, the rest of us thought that maybe we wouldn’t have enough to eat. In the end, we did have plenty of food, and Benton still likes pickled herring.

After lunch, we walked to Østerberg Ice Cream, where we got tonka nut ice cream (which tastes sort of like a nutty vanilla); apparently tonka nut is not allowed commercially in the USA.

From there, we walked towards Nyhavn (lots of bars and colorful houses), and then across the water to Beer stall for ciders. Shashank also got a crepe which exploded all over his shirt, but he was able to clean it in the bathroom before we continued on. While finishing our ciders, we walked through Freetown Christiania; in general it’s pretty cool that this exists since it feels so different from the rest of Copenhagen.

Finally, we went back to the hostel, and Benton worked while the others rested.

Once it was time for dinner, we (everyone minus Joe) walked to Satang Thai Bistro. Benton ordered a Thai iced tea which came out in a massive glass; it ended up being a normal amount of liquid since due to the amount of ice, but initially we were surprised.

Separately, Joe had a reservation at a 2 ⭐ Michelin restaurant called Restaurant Koan. He said it was one of the best experiences he has had at a fine dining restaurant, and he ended up getting a bunch of recommendations from the chef about other places to eat/drink in the city.

After dinner, Benton and Elizabeth went back to the hostel (Benton worked, Elizabeth recharged), and the others went to grab a drink. Benton had a late meeting today (which ended around 11:45pm), and took it from his section of the bunk, and by the time his meeting finished, everyone was ready to sleep.

Ryan was sick at this point, and Benton was beginning to get the sniffles, but Shashank was feeling much better by this point in the trip.
